How to Install Font on Windows 10?
Let us start with the basic installation process. We assume you already have the font file (.otf or .ttf) so no need to explain where to get custom fonts for Windows 10. If you don’t know, just Google it. The Internet is full of license-free or paid fonts.
Locate your font file and open it. You will see a new window containing examples of your font, meta information and two buttons responsible for printing and installing. Just press Install and wait second or two. Done.
One important thing to note: you can install custom fonts on Windows 10 only if your user profile has Administrator privileges. If it doesn’t, then Windows asks for an Administrator password. That is because by default Windows font manager installs fonts for all users. Luckily there is a way to legally bypass this limitation and install font on Windows 10 for the current user only. Here is how to do it.
For your information: the instruction below works only on Windows 10 1903 and newer. By the time of writing this article mentioned Windows version is still in beta. It is to be released approximately on March or April 2019.
Locate the font file and right-click it. Click Install. This option does not require Administrator privileges. If you want to add font to Windows 10 for all users, then click Install for all users. That is another option to install fonts on Windows 10. Simply right-click font file and select the appropriate option from the context menu.
But wait there is more. Windows 10 1903 has another one way to install font on Windows 10 from the Settings app.
- Press Win + I and go to Personalization > Fonts.
- You have two options here. One is to drag and drop font file. That is all you need to do. Very simple and convenient. Do note that this installs the font for the current user only and does not require Administrator privileges. Again, this option is not available on Windows 10 1809 or older versions.
- The second option is to download and install custom font on Windows 10 from Microsoft Store. Click Get more fonts in Microsoft Store. This option opens fonts section in Microsoft Store which contains free and paid fonts as well.
- Select whatever font you prefer and click Get or Buy (for paid fonts only). Windows will automatically download and install a font with no additional actions required. You can download fonts from Microsoft Store on Windows 10 1809 and newer.
